Abstract

The paper presents the analytical results of some fundamental problems of nonlinear acoustic wave propagation. It treats wave propagation in homogeneous media and in simple geometries, such as plane, cylindrical, or spherical geometry. In nonlinear acoustics, an important problem is to calculate the effects of nonlinearity on a propagating wave. It studies how originally simple waveforms, such as monochromatic waves and N-waves, are distorted because of nonlinearity. It starts with a vibration with a given time dependence and a given geometry at a certain place and calculates the effect of this vibration at another time and place. The mathematical model for these fundamental wave propagation problems is Burgers` equation.
