International expertise complement SSF review
On April 7, international reviewers will have a hearing with responsible
persons of the application to SSF regarding a Swedish Effort on Multi-Phase
Flow of which FLA is one of the contributing research institutions. The Foundation for Strategic research will then partly base their
decision for possible funding on the international review report.
Contact persons at new homepages
A new layout of our homepages are about to come out this spring. A proposed list
of industrial contact persons that will appear on these pages are available
on the existing home pages under Contact persons. It is the intention that
phone numbers and adresses will be included in the final list. For now, please check on this list
if your company has the right contact person/persons given. If you want to
add or delete anyone from the list send e-mail to ad@mech.kth.se . (The home
page list
is just a home page list and does not affect the distribution of this newsletter.)
CFX update
The CFX version at the Dept of Mechanics has been upgraded to CFX 4.2.
Complementary information can be obtained from Ola Widlund, widlund@mech.kth.se.

Travel reports
-
Staff of the Paper Technology group and representatives from industrial
partners met in Jyväskylä on March 18-19 for review of existing projects
and a guidance group meeting. Our group were honored to visit also the new
Pilot Plant at Valmet Technology Center. VTT Energy was on the afternoon
agenda. An essence of the meeting was that Jari Hämäläinen at Valmet Corporation
decided to visit FaxénLaboratoriet during the spring to discuss closer
cooperation within the project for flow in stratified headboxes.
- On March 26-27 Michael Vynnycky,
Nulifer Ipek and Jafar Mahmoudi attended a CFX-course at AEA-technology,
in Chilton.
The aim of the course was
to learn about the fundamental and multi-phase models
available in CFX-4 software.
The overall impression was very good, since they
discussed both the physics, mathematics and discretisation
methods of the models. We were also able to consult them about applications
in our own
problems, which was very valuable.
- Ola Widlund visited a workshop in Frankfurt 1-2 April on the collaboration
between industry and academia in the field of magnetic fields
in crystal growth and metals casting. The purpose of the workshop was to
identify common areas of interest for possible future collaboration. One
such area is definitly the need for MHD turbulence models to support
numerical simulation, but so far no concrete plans for collaboration have
been established.
