In this talk the development of computer modelling and simulations as a succesful discipline of its own is reviewed. Several aspects concerning physical models, algorithms and software, utilization of high-performance computers are discussed. Som examples of applications from chemical engineering, biology and materials science are shown. Finally, future challenges are given some thoughts.
