Relaxing Gases Beyond the Navier-Stokes Equations

Abstract

A new 13 moments Ansatz for a moderately rarefied gas is proposed. As basis functions, full solutions following from the first-order Chapman-Enskog method are used instead of the lowest order Hermite polynomials as in Grad's Ansatz. The resulting equations have the same general form, but with the correct values for viscosity and heat conductivity for normal, already relaxed, flows.
