Turbulent boundary-layer flow: Comparing experiments with DNS

A detailed comparison between recent DNS and experiments of a turbulent boundary layer under zero pressure gradient at $Re_\theta=2500$ and 4000 is presented. The DNS is computed in a very long spatial domain, including the disturbance strip. Good agreement is obtained for integral quantities such as skin friction and shape factor, mean and fluctuating streamwise velocity profiles, but also for the probability distribution and spectral map all throughout the boundary layer. This result is even more important in the light of the difficulty to obtain ``canonical'' flow conditions, both in DNS and the wind tunnel; effects such as boundary treatment, pressure gradient and turbulence tripping need to be considered. Therefore, we believe that due to the given cross-validation the data sets, at least for the present $Re_\theta$-range, provide important reference data for future studies.
