Friction-induced reverse chatter in rigid-body mechanisms with impacts

The dynamics of mechanical rigid body system models, in the presence of a planar one-sided constraint with dry friction is considered. In particular the non-uniqueness of solutions in forward time is studied. In addition to the well-known Painleve paradox, a novel mechanism of contact loss through an infinite sequence of impacts in finite time (reverse chatter) is introduced. The question of whether non-uniqueness can be resolved through the study of limit of compliant but stiff models is addressed.
