Abstract

The mechanism of ribbon formation in planar flow melt spinning (PFMS) of amorphous metal ribbons is considered. The theory of flow boundary layer formation has been applied to the analysis of the stationary melt puddle of this process. It has been investigated how the specific heat (C/sub p/) and viscosity change with temperature reduction. The results of calculations by the use of the finite difference method shows the influence of wheel velocity and heat transfer coefficient on the thicknesses of boundary layer, displacement boundary layer and solidified layer at the end of the melt puddle. The theoretical predictions show good agreement with the experimental results.
