In this project, criteria by which persons with motion disorders develop a motion strategy will be determined and applied in an optimization routine which can simulate optimal gait and posture patterns. Most current simulations of human movement are based on data from healthy subjects, who generally use a motion strategy that minimizes physiological effort. Persons with motion disorders and weakness or restricted range of motion may be expected to adopt a motion strategy that optimizes the effort permitted by their condition, leading to a performance criterion that is subjected to different constraints. In this project, a mathematical tool that simulates gait and posture pattern based on a predetermined and modifiable optimization criterion will be created. It will essentially calculate the optimal kinematic pattern of a person with physiological limitations, and will be tested against movement analysis experiments of persons with motion disorders. The first stage will be to express the optimization criteria and physiological constraints that achieve the best agreement with experimental data. It can then be used to suggest how posture may change after a treatment that alters these conditions. The goal is to create a simulation tool that is directly useful to clinical professionals in predicting the probable outcomes of a treatment, based on a person’s individual set of capacities and limitations, which could potentially have tremendous impact in patient care.
