My research area, shock wave focusing, is perfect for generating beautiful and interesting images. Some of them are shown in below. Enjoy!
8 cylinders, 15 mm in diameter are used to perturb a cylindrical converging shock wave. The shape of the shock wave will alternate between an octagon (8 corners) and a double octagon during the focusing process.
With a barrier of cylinders we tried to perturb the shock from one side only. The results show that the center of the converging shock the shock wave is moved slightly towards the side where the obstacles are. However, the shape of the shock is more influenced and deviates clearly from the original cylindrical shape.
One cylindrical obstacle perturbs an originally cylindrical shock wave.

I am using a code called Overture
to do numerical simulations of converging shock waves of different shapes.
- Overture is a numerical software that solves partial differential
equations on overlapping grids.
- Adaptive mesh refinement.
- Finite-difference operators: conservative and non-conservative,
2nd, 4th, 6th and 8th order accurate approximations.
- OverBlown is a solver for Navier-Stokes (both compressible
and incompressible) and Euler equations.
