CSE - Computational Science and EngineeringCSE figure

The remarkable evolution of large scale computations has in recent years created a new and revolutionary way of performing research. Simulations have become an independent and extremely useful tool to gain new knowledge. This new multi-disciplinary field is often called Computational Science and Engineering or CSE. Recently, CSE has been established as a discipline in its own right with research centers, departments, and education programs around the world. Today we are witnessing how CSE forms a new platform for scientific progress at the highest international level.

Historically, simulations were used for guidance and analysis, but were often not expected to deliver exact results for realistic problems. Today, simulations are starting to yield quantitative results with direct impact on production, design, and decision processes, and are a productive
tool for fundamental scientific research. Together with results from theoretical analysis and experimental research, truly new insights and innovations are waiting to be discovered.

CSE lives in the intersection of applied mathematics, computer science and engineering, with focal point on the engineering and natural sciences applications, see figure. However, within CSE a deeper knowledge of the computational tools used is necessary compared to what is usually the case in traditional engineering simulations. Within CSE the development of the problem solving methodologies and computer programs is integrated with the research that is performed within the application areas.
