This image shows the vorticity structures behind a sphere moving horizontally in a stratified fluid. Images are shown in the vertical plane (top) and the horizontal plane (bottom). The simulation was performed using large eddy simulation (LES) with a Reynolds number of 10,000, a Froude number of 3, and a Prandtl number of 1. Here we can see the strong role of stratification in suppressing the vertical growth of the wake. Note also that the sinuous nature of the wake is retained in the horizontal direction despite the strong changes in the vertical direction.
