II:1 Modelling of thermal stresses in the continuous casting of copper and aluminium
|
The goal of this project is to numerically model the effect of thermal stresses on the continuous casting of copper and
aluminium alloys, with a view to minimizing thermal cracks and macrosegregations. To begin with, existing one-dimensional
models for the simulation of thermal stresses will be extended, and then new thermodynamic models for solidification
under non-equilibrium conditions will be combined with stress-calculation models. Physical input data, as well as boundary
conditions for the computations will be established and verified experimentally, if necessary. In the models, an attempt will
be made to establish crack criteria, as well to compute the occurrence of macrosegregations. At a later stage, the models
will be developed for two- and three-dimensional geometries.
