II:5 Liquid metal flow with a free surface

In this project a numerical code is developed for computing the free surface between a liquid metal and air. In the magnetohydrodynamical model, LES simulation is used for modelling of the turbulent, transient flow. The aim is to understand the mechanisms of the liquid metal flow, especially the behaviour of the meniscus for different electromagnetic processes, such as electromagnetic casting (EMC), electromagnetic braking (EMBR) and electromagnetic stirring. It is of great importance to treat the meniscus as a free surface, since it directly influences the quality of the product. The project is complemented with studies of active damping of the surface using a magnetic DC field. Methods will be both experimental and theoretical, so as to complement the numerical work described above.
